Videos- White House is a 'dump', Donald Trump tells friends

Donald Trump has revealed why he spends so much time playing golf — because he thinks the White House is a “real dump”. The billionaire US President, who has a penthouse flat in New York and an estate in Florida, told golfing buddies that the mansion at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is not up to scratch.

The remark, reported by golf.com, infuriated Chelsea Clinton, who called the White House home for eight years. “Thank you to all the White House ushers, butlers, maids, chefs, florists, gardeners, plumbers, engineers & curators for all you do every day,” she tweeted in response.

The White House has 132 rooms, including 16 family-guest rooms, three kitchens and 35 bathrooms. It has a bowling alley, tennis court, basketball court, putting green, cinema, jogging track and swimming pool.

Mr Trump criticised his predecessor Barack Obama during the election campaign for the time he spent on the golf course. But the President has spent 43 days on the fairways since taking office 193 days ago, according to NBC.

He also spent 21 of his first 26 weekends away from Washington, mainly at his Florida getaway, where the Versailles-style gaudiness is in stark contrast to the neo-classical decor of the White House.

Meanwhile it was revealed that Mr Trump has said he wants to be involved more with the UK, because “you don’t hear the word Britain anymore”.

Promising a big post-Brexit trade deal, he made the remark in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. “I can say that we’re going to be very involved with the UK,” he said.

He also wondered whether there would be another Scottish referendum on independence, and worried about the consequences for the British Open golf tournament. “It would be terrible. They just went through hell,” the President said. Mr Trump owns two golf courses in Scotland.
